A Serious Topic… in a Cartoon Body
With the exception of Michael Vick’s Pitbull ring, I have not seen such wide-spread media coverage for an animal-related horror story such as this in such a long time.
Thanks to the US Humane Society’s undercover investigation the world’s slaughterhouses finally have windows. In a nutshell, the investigation shows how downed cows (cows too injured or diseased to stand) are treated and slaughtered for beef consumption in the U.S. (and in the case of this particular slaughterhouse, mostly by U.S. school children.) Even those who don’t feel farm animals have rights to live their lives peacefully, everyone should be outraged at least by the fact that this crap (and believe me, there IS crap in that burger) has been USDA approved and is resting on a bun on your kids’ lunch trays!
I was personally pleased to first hear the story on my local news programs throughout the day, then again on this evening’s World news and again and again and again in scores of publications around the world. I’m going to be lazy and point you to the collection of articles highlighted on Erik Marcus’s website here. Inform yoursef! Get angry, even! If you’re really inspired, make a positive change!
The video captured by the USHS is graphic and not everyone has the stomach for it. (Imagine what the cows feel, not to mention the people behind the prods and the machinery, many of whom must feel they have no other option but to persist in their role of murderer.) For those who want a more light-hearted view of the situation regarding these beef cows, there is a wonderful animated depiction of the life of a cow-to-be-slaughtered called Doreen the Downer. It was created by an animator named Mark Fiore. Kudos to him!
